RSS - Another Friendly Acronym
RSS which means Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication is a great thing. Think of it this way, not all readers may want to navigate to your site to see your content. They might be lazy, or maybe the read too many blogs? RSS enables a reader to view the content of your blog through an “RSS Feed”. Don’t worry about the specifics but if you want to know it formats a XML file with your content and sends it to any number of RSS readers.
I’ve got you covered though. Using Feedburner and the Feedburner plug-in I suggested in the plug-in post allows you to track just how many readers are getting your content through RSS. Feedburner offers small icons or “Chicklets” to allow the reader to see that you offer an RSS feed. Normally it says something along the lines of “subscribe” with a small orange and white square. In most cases the reader is able to click the icon and select their feed reader from a list and they are ready to read your blog. Feedburner also allows you to use other icons to show just how many people are reading your RSS feed. Think of it as being able to show people just how popular you are.
For instance right now the Feedburner chicklet on Sharethemoneywith.us shows that I have 15 subscribers, however over at http://www.lithman.net David Lithman is a bit more popular and he’s got 62 readers. Basically, enabling your readers to get your content via RSS is simple. Almost a situation of set it, and forget it.
