bokardo.com has a few comments which are quite spot on for the would be blogger. What you say is valuable, post often, use commenting to refine your point, etc. I think we’ve heard most of it before in one form or another. But one point struck me as particularly important:

Derrich from Derrich.com decided to put a little mayhem into the flurry of pools which is normally March Madness. Derrich has decided to create his own blogging March Madness and yours truly was included!

Here’s where I need your help. I’m seeded 8th against the number 1 seed Shoemoney. Now in order to pull a monumental upset against this blogging powerhouse, I need as many votes as possible. In order for a vote to be valid, a reader needs to leave a comment in that post at Derrich’s blog, and you must include 4 votes.

Oh and other fan favorites such as NetBusinessBlog, and John Chow make their appearances as well…

Edit: I had originally deleted this post but the feed burners sucked it up too quick so I’m putting it back so I don’t have a dead link floating around the blogosphere!

Know your place. Not just in the community, but in the blogosphere. Share your blog. But you don’t want to spam. Technorati is a tool that is great for knowing where you stand in the blogosphere. According to Technorati.com/about

“Technorati is the recognized authority on what’s happening on the World Live Web, right now.”

Now you’re saying to yourself what the hell does that mean, well basically you get yourself an account, claim your blog, and let them do the rest. MyBlogLog, that’s like the bloggers MySpace. Make an account, post info about your blog, build up a group of friends…. You know the routine.

Why is Technorati great?
Technorati will automatically get a ping from your blog when you make a new post. Basically like a little notice saying “Hey! I just wrote something”. Technorati ranks your blog. It can tell you who is linking to you, and who links to you. This is better than Google in a way because you get almost instant gratification, the blogging world can see you. Also along with your rank, Technorati shows a listing of popular topics or tags you use when writing. Also Technorati shows all incoming links for a blog. So let’s say that someone is reading through the Technorati page for Net Business Blog, and they see that ShareTheMoneyWith.Us has linked there and they are interested so then they can click on the link to come to my site. Why is Technorati important? Technorati can give you some pretty good stats about your blog. It also allows your blog to be searched during the crucial time when you are growing your blog before Google lets your out of their sandbox.

Why is MyBlogLog great?
It’s a community of bloggers! I think I like MyBlogLog a bit more than Technorati. Technorati may be official and give you ranks of stuff, but MyBlogLog seems much more fun. You create an account, and much like MySpace or Facebook you’ve got your friends or contacts. People can leave you messages, or leave messages about your blog. You’ve got your admirers. MyBlogLog also shows you the 5 most recent people who’ve viewed your profile. It’s not so much to see who’s lurking but is a way to give them a bit of advertising for their own blog. Don’t worry, you show up on a users 5 most recent viewers when you check out their profile too! Why is MyBlogLog important? Because it is free publicity! You just browse around finding blogs that seem interesting and you leave your own little bit of a trail by way of your popping up on the 5 most recent viewer listing.

Time to be social. Time to grow your blog.

RSS which means Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication is a great thing. Think of it this way, not all readers may want to navigate to your site to see your content. They might be lazy, or maybe the read too many blogs? RSS enables a reader to view the content of your blog through an “RSS Feed”. Don’t worry about the specifics but if you want to know it formats a XML file with your content and sends it to any number of RSS readers.

I’ve got you covered though. Using Feedburner and the Feedburner plug-in I suggested in the plug-in post allows you to track just how many readers are getting your content through RSS. Feedburner offers small icons or “Chicklets” to allow the reader to see that you offer an RSS feed. Normally it says something along the lines of “subscribe” with a small orange and white square. In most cases the reader is able to click the icon and select their feed reader from a list and they are ready to read your blog. Feedburner also allows you to use other icons to show just how many people are reading your RSS feed. Think of it as being able to show people just how popular you are.

For instance right now the Feedburner chicklet on Sharethemoneywith.us shows that I have 15 subscribers, however over at http://www.lithman.net David Lithman is a bit more popular and he’s got 62 readers. Basically, enabling your readers to get your content via RSS is simple. Almost a situation of set it, and forget it.

Now that you’ve got your new blog up and properly prepped you’re ready to go. Surely you will want as many readers as possible and you will want to engage your readers. Now the sad truth of it is that the Google Sandbox will catch the best of us but there are a few ways to past this and spread the word about your blog despite Google’s setback. This week I’ll spend some time talking about how to spread the word and beef up your readership even if you aren’t getting any love from Google just yet.

ENCOURAGE COMMENTING - It’s just that simple. Engage your reader. You made the post now encourage the reader to turn it into a conversation. Surely you will want to know what your reader’s opinions are, and if you don’t you should! Now that Top Commentators plugin we used automatically gives the people who leave the most comments a free link back. Don’t just let the readers comment, be sure to respond to their comments. Engaging and responding to your readers is key to sustaining and growing your amount of readers.

Today for example I got a comment from a reader named Broc simply telling me to get it together and post more. No problem Broc, keep in mind that the site is only a little more than 2 weeks old and I’m on spring break. But honestly, I appreciate any comments I get (as long as they aren’t spam) because it’s good to have feedback, good or bad, from my readers. It encourages me to keep writing because I know someone is reading.
